Photo- Rick Santorum Electrifies A Black Church Audience

Thu Feb 2, 2012 4:17 PM EST
religion, gay-rights, santorum, black-church, oneil-dozier
By Plantsmantx

Every time I look at this photo, I see something that makes me laugh all over again:).

Advertise | AdChoices

On the serious side- this photo was taken at the Worldwide Christian Center in Pompano Beach, FL. The church's pastor, O'Neal Dozier, is listed as "honorary Florida chairman" of Rick Santorum's campaign. He's been quoted as saying that gay people "make God want to vomit". Ok...now we know he and Santorum are on the same page. But, what about Dozier's congregation? The photo might give some indication. It would be nice to be able to say without a doubt that they aren't on the same page with Santorum and their pastor in regard to gay rights, but we don't know that, do we? If the photo is any indication, there is at least some part of his message that doesn't exactly excite them, and that's some consolation...I guess.

If Santorum really wanted to get their attention he should've said, "I'm not trying to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money"...

Please tell me this was Photoshopped! Un-freakin-believeable!

In the second row, a young woman to Santorum's right and a young man to Santorum's left both seem to be praying. Probably something similar to "Oh God, please let him stop talking."

Priceless photograph, Plants. Great find.

I have two thoughts.

One the photo is very funny. Santorum is the one who is not in on the joke, and that is humorous.

Two is that if this were a picture of a prominent liberal black figure talking while a group of all white people behind him were sleeping, daydreaming or ignoring him, we would be flooded with comments about how they were disrespecting him because of his race.

He's no more boring than any other politician, or at least most of them. To tell the truth, the fact that these people can have a guest speaker at their church and think nothing of falling asleep and ignoring him, en masse, makes me wonder about them as much as it makes me wonder about his 'magnetism'.

Well that's nice. What we often see on Newsvine is this so called 'troll' appeal , as if that is the answer to the questions being posed.

I do agree the photo is funny, and Santorum is pretty boring by average person standards. (By politician standards he is run of the mill boring in my opinion).

But my comments are very fair. If this were a white audience and a black speaker we would damn well be hearing the r word on this thread and we all know it.

How about show an example instead of talking out of the side of your neck. This is a funny pic regardless of who is in the front and Santorum just makes it more hilarious because he is a TOTAL snooze fest.

The fact that you think it will be different if the skin of the members of the church and speaker were reversed says FAR more about you and the type of person you are.

I'm wondering about his literal hard-right tilt in the picture. How does he stand like that? Is he listing to starboard? Did his right leg collapse six inches? Has gravity ignored him too?

Is this picture slanted, or does this man literally practice a right-leaning stance?

What'll go un-noticed is that many black preachers rail against gays (black churches are very conservative on this issue for the most part)...but often the "Minister of Music" or the organist or "Choir Director" is as gay as gay can get!

And I'm fairly certain that's why the choir was like..."whatever Lil Ricky, whatever"!

Who was that black preacher that got busted for sexing the young guys in his church in Atlanta?

Find a picture as you have described above that depicts a black blowhard talking to a white congregation, with the emphasis on the youth choir who are bored listless and laughing (like children do) and then we can test that theory. Otherwise, you are just blowing steam where none should exist.

all african american preachers know this and that is why most sermons are very entertaining events.

if a person gives a speech in front of an african american audience that is against their self interest they will give that person the polite (silent) listen and that is all. that is all the speaker deserves.

          @ Iskate:

re: What does race have to do with a picture of ill-mannered children?

Race was first brought up by sambonner; see below.

Two is that if this were a picture of a prominent liberal black figure talking while a group of all white people behind him were sleeping, daydreaming or ignoring him, we would be flooded with comments about how they were disrespecting him because of his race.

He initially injected race into this discussion. Then, Im4 me made further insults along those same lines. Did you read the entire thread or just one post from Im4 me?

Sorry to have to say this, but I'm with IM4 on this one.

Of course you are. Of course.

          The question is:

What does race have to do with a picture of ill-mannered children?

I am not responsible for what other posters write. I am not a pea. Can anyone answer this question without smartypants replies?

Can you read the seed without someone holding your hand? Don't set yourself up for "smartypants replies" and then be astonished when you get them.
